{"id":776,"date":"2021-05-28T07:29:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T12:29:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/biblicalmastery.com\/blog\/?p=776"},"modified":"2021-05-28T07:34:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T12:34:54","slug":"776","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biblicalmastery.com\/blog\/?p=776","title":{"rendered":"The Powerful Impact of the Gospel Acts 18:23-19:20"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">Lesson 34<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">The Powerful Impact of the Gospel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center\">Acts 18:23-19:20<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teaching is\nsuch a privilege.&nbsp; With it however comes\na great responsibility. To me the responsibility is how do I impact the lives\nof those I teach?&nbsp; Because I have such a\npassion for God\u2019s word my greatest challenge and desire is to pass on what I\nhave learned so that the next generation of believers will also share in that\ndesire to share what they have learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do not\nknow how my teaching has affected the many over the years that have sat in\nclassrooms in two different churches.&nbsp;\nOnly God knows if anything that has been said has taken root.&nbsp; It is not for me to know what will occur in\nthe lives of those individuals.&nbsp; I am to\nbe faithful to the task to which God has called me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I believe that\nwe as a church are very close to losing a whole generation or more because we\nhave not taken seriously our responsibility to truly mentor those who would\nfollow us in the faith.&nbsp; A number of\nbooks have been written by men who are concerned that the church has drifted in\nemotionalism and entertainment and left behind the intellectual pursuit of\nknowing God.&nbsp; Unless we, like Paul,\nrecognize the need to raise up a whole new generation of godly leaders who know\nGod\u2019s word and are able to teach it we are in deep trouble.&nbsp; The Scripture in Deuteronomy 6 gives us the\nmodel we are to use in making sure that the Church continues strong in the face\nof the onslaught of a godless society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main\nfocus of the study will be about the people of Ephesus.&nbsp; Paul had left Aquila and Priscilla\nthere.&nbsp; It was to that city that Apollos\ncame to share what he knew about Jesus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ephesus was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A primary market city in that part of\nAsia Minor.<\/li><li>A city where the Roman governor often\ntried cases of importance<\/li><li>The place where the Pan-Ionian games\nwere held.&nbsp; To be chosen to organize\nthese games were a great honor.&nbsp; The\ntitle of these organizers was Asiarchs.<\/li><li>The home of criminals. The Temple Artemus\nlocated there was considered a refuge for any criminal who could reach its\ngrounds, thus the city was full of those fleeing from prosecution. <\/li><li>Center of pagan superstition.\nParchments called the Ephesian Letters were supposed to bring good luck to\nthose who possessed them.&nbsp; They were so\npopular that they were purchased by people from all over the world.<\/li><li>As mentioned, the location of the\nTemple of Artemus in Greek and Diana in Latin.&nbsp;\nArtemus was the goddess of fertility.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the\nplace in which Paul was to have success and his some of his greatest\nchallenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 18:23<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After\nspending time at Antioch, Paul went on the road again.&nbsp; Taking a different route he traveled through\nGalatia and Phrygia with the main purpose of strengthening those who had become\nfollowers of Christ. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why did Paul feel it necessary to\ntake a third missionary trip?<\/li><li>What was he trying to accomplish as\nhe went through Galatia and Phrygia?<\/li><li>By strengthening the brethren what\ndid he expect to happen in those regions?<\/li><li>What does his example say to us about\nour responsibility to those in the church?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts\n18:24-25<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these\nverses a new figure appears on the Scene, Apollos of Alexandria.&nbsp; Some say that the church in Alexandria was\nstarted by John Mark.&nbsp; How ironic that the\none rejected by Paul would be instrumental in the conversion of Apollos, who\nwould in a way become a co-worker of Paul.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment\nlet\u2019s look at this city that produced Apollos.&nbsp;\nAlexandria would be a city described as: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A port city on the Mediterranean Sea\non the northern coast of Africa in present day Egypt.&nbsp; <\/li><li>An important commercial center because\nof its location in the Roman Empire.<\/li><li>Having a large population of Jews.<\/li><li>The place where the Greek translation\nof the Old Testament was begun.<\/li><li>A city of scholarship with one of the\nlargest libraries in existence at that time with over 60,000 volumes.<\/li><li>Home of some of the earliest church\nfathers like Clement and Origen.<\/li><li>The city where allegorical\ninterpretation of the Old Testament began.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having the\nopportunities available to him Apollos was described as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A man of learning<\/li><li>Mighty in the Scriptures <\/li><li>One who had been instructed in the\nway of the Lord<\/li><li>Fervent in Spirit<\/li><li>One who accurately spoke and taught\nabout Jesus<\/li><li>One who was only familiar with the\nbaptism of John.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why is it important to know about the\nplace from which Apollos came?<\/li><li>In what way could that type of\nenvironment shape a young man like Apollos?<\/li><li>How did he differ from the men of\nAthens?<\/li><li>What are the qualities that most stand\nout about him in your mind?<\/li><li>Why are they important to you?<\/li><li>What was the one thing he was\nlacking?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 18:26<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With his\nbackground, Apollos was able to begin speaking immediately in the\nsynagogue.&nbsp; His message was presented\nwith the authority of one who knew the Scriptures and was able to present the\nfacts of Jesus with all boldness.&nbsp; When Aquila\nand Priscilla, the couple left by Paul in Ephesus, heard him speak they began\nmentoring him giving him private sessions.&nbsp;\nLuke tells us that they, \u201cExplained the way of God more\naccurately.\u201d&nbsp; Apollos had his facts\nstraight about Jesus, head knowledge, but was lacking the infilling of the Holy\nSpirit, heart knowledge.&nbsp; He was like so\nmany in church today that think that because know who Jesus is, they are fine\nbut, in fact have not given their heart to Him.&nbsp;\nAquila and Priscilla realized that Apollos was living under an\nincomplete understanding of salvation, thinking that the baptism of John for\nthe remission of sins was enough.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was the message of Apollos\nbefore he met Aquila and Priscilla?<\/li><li>What did the couple see missing from\nhis message?<\/li><li>Why is it important to have people\nlike Aquila and Priscilla in the church today?<\/li><li>What is their role?<\/li><li>How effective can a church be without\nthem?<\/li><li>What did Luke mean by the statement\n\u201cthey explained the way of God more accurately?\u201d<\/li><li>In what ways was Apollo like so many\nin the church today?<\/li><li>What is missing in the lives of so\nmany people?<\/li><li>How effective can the ministry be of\nthose who only have head knowledge of Jesus?<\/li><li>What will have to those who are not\ntotally committed to Jesus when life challenges come their way?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts\n18:27-28<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After\nreceiving instruction from those in the church in Ephesus Apollos left Asia\nMinor and crossed over to Achaia in Greece.&nbsp;\nHe was sent off with a letter of recommendation. Notice the change in\nhim.&nbsp; When he arrived in Achaia, he was\nan encouragement to those who had believed in Jesus by grace alone.&nbsp; He continued the work started by Paul,\nrefuted the inaccuracies of the arguments of the Jews by showing that Jesus was\nthe Christ according to the Scriptures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was the result of the\ninstructions of Aquila and Priscilla?<\/li><li>Why did the disciples give him a\nletter of recommendation?<\/li><li>What is the evidence that showed that\nhe understood salvation by grace alone?<\/li><li>What is the best evidence that he had\nhad a life changing experience in Ephesus?<\/li><li>What was different about his messages\nto the Jews in Achaia than what he had shared in Ephesus?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 19:1-7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Apollos\nhad moved on to Corinth, Paul once again came to Ephesus. He found some\ndisciples who were in the same spiritual condition as Apollos had been\npreviously.&nbsp; They were believers but had only\nbeen baptized in the baptism of John and not of the Holy Spirit.&nbsp; As has been stated this was a baptism for\nrepentance of sins, not salvation.&nbsp; To be\ntruly saved one must receive Jesus as Savior through the work of the Holy\nSpirit.&nbsp; These men had not received the\nsealing of the Holy Spirit. Paul explained that Jesus to whom John pointed was\nthe One who had brought salvation to mankind.&nbsp;\nWhen they heard it, they were then baptized in, \u201cThe name of the Lord\nJesus.\u201d&nbsp; Paul then laid hands on them and\nthey received the Holy Spirit as evidenced by the speaking in other\nlanguages.&nbsp; They also began to prophesy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How is that so many only go part way\nin their understanding of salvation?<\/li><li>Why were these men so receptive to\nPaul\u2019s message to them?<\/li><li>Why will John\u2019s baptism never bring\nsalvation to man?<\/li><li>Why did the Holy Spirit cause these\nparticular men to speak in other languages and prophesy when there is no\nevidence that this occurred in the life of Apollos?<\/li><li>What does it mean when men are sealed\nby the Holy Spirit?&nbsp; (See Ephesians\n1:13-14)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 19:8-10<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though\nPaul had been called to minister to the Gentiles he once again went to the\nsynagogue of the Jews.&nbsp; There is no need\nto once again discuss the reasons.&nbsp;\nSuffice it to say that the results were similar to what took place in\nprevious cities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul spent\nhis first three months reasoning with the Jews in the synagogue trying to\nconvince them about the real kingdom of God.&nbsp;\nAs has been seen before, eventually they refused to listen to his\nmessage and began speaking against Christ.&nbsp;\nHe then moved in the School of Tyrannus where he continued to teach the\ndisciples for about two years. Both Jews and Gentiles from Asia came to hear\nthe message of Christ. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why would Paul expect different\nresults than he had previously experienced?<\/li><li>How did what happen help him begin a\nnew church in the city?<\/li><li>Why was it important for him to have\na place like the School of Tyrannus as his base of operation?<\/li><li>What does it say about what Paul did\nthere that he was able to remain for two years?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts\n19:11-12<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only was\nPaul able to teach, but God began to perform miracles through him.&nbsp; God used even part of Paul\u2019s personal items\nlike aprons and handkerchiefs to bring about the healings. In addition to\nphysical cures demons were also exorcised from the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why did Luke give more emphasis to\nmiracles here than previously discussed in other cities?<\/li><li>Why did God use Paul\u2019s personal\npossessions to bring about the healings? <\/li><li>Why was demon possession specifically\nmentioned?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 19:13-16<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Jewish\nmen claimed to be exorcists.&nbsp; When they\nattempted to cast an evil spirit out of a man using the name of \u201cJesus whom\nPaul preaches\u201d the demon turned on the seven sons of Sceva and wounded\nthem.&nbsp; The demon knew Jesus and he knew Paul,\nbut he did not know those seven men and responded based on that fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why did the seven sons of Sceva\ninvoke the name of Jesus?<\/li><li>What indicated that they did not have\nthe power of Paul?<\/li><li>What might happen in the city when\nwhat Paul had accomplished was compared to the seven men?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts\n19:17-19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news of\nthis event reached the ears of both the Jews and Greeks. Luke wrote, \u201cFear fell\nupon them all in the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.\u201d &nbsp;This became a time of confession and\nrepentance for the people of Ephesus.&nbsp; As\nhas been mentioned they were a very superstitious people.&nbsp; Many of them practice magic.&nbsp; When confronted with true miracles and the\nactions of God in casting out evil spirits they brought the tools of their\ntrade, books of magic and burned them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why would the actions of the demon\npossessed man have such an impact on the people?<\/li><li>Why did they become so afraid?<\/li><li>To whom did they give credit for all\nthat had occurred?<\/li><li>What changes did the acknowledgement\nof what God had done make in their lives?<\/li><li>How much attention do we give to all\nthat God is doing in our world?<\/li><li>What impact does all of the chaos\nhave on us?<\/li><li>What have we done as a result of\nhearing the truth?<\/li><li>How has it changed our lives?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acts 19:20<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ephesus at\nthat point had to be an exciting place to be.&nbsp;\nGod\u2019s word was being proclaimed and impacting the lives of the people in\na mighty way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What brought the people to the point\nthat God\u2019s word was growing in their hearts in a mighty way?<\/li><li>How far had these new believers come?<\/li><li>In what way did the patience and\ncourage of Paul pay off?<\/li><li>What could happen in the life of a\ncity where the gospel had such an impact?<\/li><li>What lessons can we learn from the\nactions of Paul?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From what we\nhave seen in these verses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Consider the ways your life has\nimpacted others?<\/li><li>Have the things you have done drawn\npeople closer to God?<\/li><li>Think about the ways you might impact\nthe next generation so that from among them might come the next Timothy\u2019s,\nAquila\u2019s, Priscilla\u2019s and Apollos\u2019 of the faith.<\/li><li>Consider ways that you might stir up\nyour family and community for Christ.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;All too often we get stuck in a rut in our\nfaith.&nbsp; There needs to be evidence that\nwe are change agents for Christ.&nbsp; If we\nallow ourselves to continue in the same way that have operated in the past, we\ncan only expect that the next generation that we are to impact will do the\nsame.&nbsp; We need to re-examine ourselves to\nsee if we are a catalyst for Christ.&nbsp;\nWithout dynamic life-changing people the church will become not a place\nthat brings fear of the consequences of sin but a place that condones what is\ntaking place in the world.&nbsp; Like the\nEphesians let\u2019s symbolically burn those things that hinder us from being the\nkind of Church God wants us to be.&nbsp; We\nare not be blinded to what needs to take place in each person\u2019s life to advance\nthe kingdom of God. Immediate action is necessary to save us from\nmediocrity.&nbsp; God please open our hearts\nand minds to what needs to be done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional\nNotes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-Paul made a third missionary journey.&nbsp; His travels took him through Galatia and\nPhrygia where he spent time strengthening the disciples. (Acts 18:23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-Apollos displayed the qualities that each of us\nshould possess.&nbsp; He was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mighty\nin the Scriptures<\/li><li>Instructed\nin the way of the Lord<\/li><li>Fervent\nin spirit<\/li><li>Able\nto teach and speak accurately the things concerning Jesus.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;(18:24-25)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-Apollos, a Jew, from Alexandria came to Ephesus\nteaching about Jesus.&nbsp; He only knew about\nthe baptism of John.&nbsp; Priscilla and\nAquila heard him speak.&nbsp; They took aside\nand gave him instructions in order for him to more clearly understand the ways\nof God.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; (Acts 18:24-26)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-We are to never reach the point that we are not\nwilling to learn. (Acts 18:26)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-We must have the attitude of one who is teachable.\nFurthermore it is a reality that learning is a lifelong process. (Acts 18:26)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-There may be different needs but a believer should\nbe ready to give help to other believers. (Acts 18:27)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-It is only as we gain knowledge of God\u2019s word are\nwe able to refute the arguments of the opponents of Christ by using the\nScriptures to show that He is indeed the Son of God and the Messiah. (Acts\n18:28)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-After spending time with Aquila and Priscilla,\nApollos wanted to go to Achaia.&nbsp; The\nbrethren provided him with a letter of recommendation.&nbsp; When he arrived he began to help those who\nhad believed through the grace of God.&nbsp;\nHe was able to refute the arguments in a powerful way. They were shown\nthrough the Scripture that Jesus was the Christ.&nbsp; With people like Apollos, Aquila and\nPriscilla we are beginning to see the third generation of leaders come on the\nscene. (Acts 18:27-28)&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-RT-It is always with the word of God that arguments\nare destroyed.&nbsp; God is always shown to be\ngreater than any of His detractors. (Acts 18:28)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OC-The truth of Jesus will always overcome the\ndoctrines of man. (Acts 18:28)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TM-There is only one source for convincing people that\nJesus is the Messiah.&nbsp; It is through\nGod\u2019s word that man learns of Jesus.&nbsp; The\nScriptures that Apollos used would have been the Old Testament. (Acts 18:28)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-Paul travelled to Ephesus.&nbsp; Some disciples who had only received the\nbaptism of repentance heard the message of Jesus.&nbsp; They were then baptized in His name.&nbsp; Paul laid hands on them and the Holy Spirit\ncame upon them.&nbsp; Like many before them\nthey began to speak in tongues and were prophesying.&nbsp; (Acts 19:1-7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DM-Paul did not continue to reason with and teach\nthose who became hardened and disobedient to the word.&nbsp; There were those who were not satisfied with\njust turning away but began, \u201cto speak evil of the Way.\u201d&nbsp; It was at this point that Paul moved his\nteaching point to the school of Tyrannus.&nbsp;\nThere he spent about two years teaching the new disciples. (Acts\n19:8-10)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-When Paul arrived in Ephesus he entered the\nsynagogue which was his normal practice.&nbsp;\nFor three months he spoke with great boldness, reasoning and persuading\nthe Jews about God\u2019s kingdom.&nbsp; As is\nfound wherever the gospel is preached there will those who harden their\nhearts.&nbsp; Ephesus certainly was no\ndifferent.&nbsp; These men were disobedient\nand spoke evil about the Way.&nbsp; Paul\ntherefore left the synagogue and took with him the new disciples of the\ncity.&nbsp; He spoke daily after that in the\nschool of a man named Tyrannus.&nbsp; For two\nyears he worked among the people of Ephesus.&nbsp;\nWe are told that during that time all who lived in Asia heard the word\nwhether they were Greek or Jew. (Acts 19:8-10)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-Sometimes we can understand the qualities that we\nare to possess by looking at the opposite of those characteristics.&nbsp; A follower of Christ is not to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One\nwhose heart is hardened<\/li><li>Disobedient\n<\/li><li>One\nwho speaks evil of Christianity<\/li><li>One\nwho loses the opportunity to hear because the messenger has left and taken the\ngood news to someone else. (Acts 19:9)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GC-Christ\u2019s followers are to be in God\u2019s word daily.\n(Acts 19:9)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-Miracles such as had never been seen before in\nEphesus were being performed through Paul. (Acts 19:11-12)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C-There were seven Jews who went about trying to\nperform exorcisms by invoking Jesus\u2019 name through Paul.&nbsp; The demons did not recognize the men and saw\nthat they had no power and beat them badly.&nbsp;\nAs a result great fear fell on both Jew and Greek.&nbsp; The name of the Lord Jesus was being\nmagnified and many began to believe.&nbsp;\nThose who had practiced magic brought the books they possessed to be\nburned.&nbsp; \u201cThe word of the Lord was\ngrowing mightily and prevailing.\u201d&nbsp; (Acts\n19:14-20) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RT-The gods and goddesses of this world have already\nbeen dethroned.&nbsp; Their worshippers and\nadherents just have not realized it yet.&nbsp;\nThey keep trying to force their world view on the rest of us who do not\nhold to the humanist ideology.
